How Five Mile works
Five Mile is a free fuel price finder for the UK, France and Spain. It ranks nearby petrol stations by what a fill really costs once the extra driving to reach them is counted, not just by the price on the sign.
What it does
You give Five Mile a postcode, a town or your location. It looks at every petrol station within 5 miles that has a current price, and shows the cheapest, the nearest, and the one that works out best overall for a fill. It is free and needs no account.
How the saving is worked out
Every station is compared with the nearest one. The pump saving is the difference in price per litre multiplied by the size of the fill, which is 50 litres unless you change it. The cost of the drive is the extra distance there and back, turned into fuel at your car's miles per gallon (40 unless you change it) and priced at that station's own price per litre. Distances are straight-line distances with 30 per cent added to allow for roads. Stations are ordered by the saving left after the drive.
For example, a station 2 miles further away that is 4p a litre cheaper saves £2.00 on a 50 litre fill. The extra 5.2 miles there and back burns about 0.6 litres, around £0.89 at 150p a litre, so the net saving is about £1.11. A station that is only 1p cheaper but much further away can come out behind the nearest one.
Where the prices come from
UK prices come from the government's Fuel Finder scheme, which retailers report to under the Open Government Licence v3.0. French prices come from prix-carburants.gouv.fr and Spanish prices from the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition. UK prices are checked every few minutes and French and Spanish prices every half hour, and every station shows when it last set its price.
Prices set more than 28 days ago are not ranked, and prices outside a plausible range (below 50p or above 500p a litre) are left out as probable errors.
What the figures cannot tell you
Savings are estimates and are not guaranteed. Distances are straight-line, roads and traffic vary, and a station can change its price after it has reported it, so check the price at the pump. Nobody pays to appear on Five Mile or to be ranked higher.
Who runs it
Five Mile is run by Aspect 23 Ltd, a UK company. You can reach us at info@aspect23.com. It works in any browser, and the terms and privacy and cookies pages explain the rest.
Common questions
Is Five Mile free?
Yes. Five Mile is free to use and needs no account.
Which countries does it cover?
The United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland, France and Spain.
Where do the prices come from?
UK prices come from the government's Fuel Finder scheme, French prices from prix-carburants.gouv.fr and Spanish prices from the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition. UK prices are checked every few minutes and French and Spanish prices every half hour, and each station shows when it last set its price.
Is the cheapest station always the best one to use?
Not always. A station a few pence cheaper can cost more overall if it is a long way off. Five Mile takes the cost of the extra driving off the saving at the pump and ranks stations by what is left.
How accurate are the savings?
They are estimates. Distances are straight-line distances with 30 per cent added for roads, and the fuel used depends on your car. Prices can change after a station reports them, so check the price at the pump. Savings are not guaranteed.
Does Five Mile keep my location?
No. Your location or postcode is used for the search only and is not kept on our servers. In the UK, postcodes and town names are looked up with postcodes.io.
Can it help on my commute?
Yes. Set a home and a work place and Five Mile finds stations near the route between them, so you can see which stop adds the least extra driving.
